A Ring of Flowers Bracelet

First, some news

- I have just finished listing some new kits at both my Etsy and ArtFire shops. Enjoy!

- I have recently joined a local farmer's (and artisan's) market - Central Texas Grower's Association. They are a great group of people and I have set up twice so far. I even sold some jewelry! If you are in the area, I recommend stopping by (I only set up in the Seguin market, but the others also set up in San Marcos). There are some veggie growers, a couple who sell pastured/grass-fed beef, pork and chicken, and some artisans who sell handmade soaps, crocheted scarfs and hats, creams, pizza, etc. Sometimes the Fair Trade Coffee guy shows up as well.

On a personal note, we have lost one of our older cats - Bella - She passed away due to kidney failure last month. She will be missed. We have also had a rash of teeth problems, myself as well as two other of our older cats. All is now well, teeth have been pulled and gums are healing.

Okay, now for what was promised in the title: A new bracelet - I think it is really SWEET. You see, I had intended to order flower cone beads with the hole from top to bottom for tassels...and ordered these with the hole from side to side instead. So I had to come up with a way to use them and this is what I came up with.

I won't be listing it for sale right away, I need it to look at while I make some more with a few variations...plus, I just don't want to let go of it yet (selfish, I know).

Coiled - A New Necklace Design

Another Lark's Head Design

A couple of weeks ago, I was perusing some of my early work. One of them gave me some inspiration...

Not sure what to name this one - The design is based on Lark's Head Knots and lends itself rather nicely to using two different colors of cord. Here are the two bracelets I have made so far.

First, my prototype - I'm keeping this one for myself!

And the second one - Just need to make a couple more and photograph the steps for my upcoming book...

Anyone with any ideas what to call this design?

Just a Few Lines...

To let you all know I am still alive (and well). It seems one thing after another has served to distract me. The latest of which is putting in a garden. Well, now most of the garden is planted and beginning to grow. If only the nights would warm up so the tomatoes would stop "dropping blossoms" before making baby tomatoes...kind of strange as this is Central Texas and the nights are usually pretty warm by mid May. Oh well, at least the plants are growing and will be of a good size once the nights do warm up.

My biggest news is that I am warming up to finally get to work on that book I always wanted to write. I have organized my photography and have written my outline. Next will be to see what of my previous photography will be useful and then to begin filling in the blanks. I plan to integrate my current patterns as they are pretty basic. I have some new "basics" (yes, I plan to include "Lattice") to add and several variations of all the basics. I plan for the book to be a sort of "course" in the "Basics of Micro Macrame"...beginning with the simple and moving into more complex designs. I think each chapter will have a "sampler" of variations, followed by specific projects. I hope to make the closures (both button types and clasp types) modular so people can learn how to adapt any closure to any project.

Thank you all in advance for your patience. I may not post much in the coming months (what else is new?) but, at least you all know why.

More Micro Macrame Kits Just Listed

As promised, I am back today to post some more news.

Yesterday, I listed some "Speckled Fans Jewelry Set" kits in a variety of colors.

And today, I listed some "Casual Diamonds Bracelet" kits in a variety of colors. The include some really cool triangular metal buttons with a "Celtic Knot" motif that I found the last time Button Drawer had a big sale. Appropriate, I thought.

By the way, did you notice I am experimenting with some new photos for my kits? Picassa now has the capacity to make "collages" from photos. I love it. I think the collages make it "cleaner" looking and easier to see what the kit is for, especially in thumbnails.

I do have more to write about, but not sure if that will be tomorrow or sometime this weekend. Stay tuned.

Finally, An Update!

I know, I know. I've been bad. I haven't written in so long. But, I have been busy.
Where to start? Wellllllll.....

I have been playing with knotting scheme used in my "Entrapped" bracelet that many of you remember:

That bracelet utilized a "knotting in the round" type of scheme. So, I wondered where else I could take it. As you probably remember, I had already tried it with the "Acorn" earrings:

Then, I played with this idea:

And then, I made this necklace for a contest over at Beads Perles. I call it "Comets at Midnight". I did not win, but I had a lot of fun and learned a lot about this knotting scheme. If I were to make this necklace today, I would change a few things, but overall I think I like it.

I promise I will write more tomorrow, but Hubby is coming home soon and will want his turn at the internet.

Yes, I do Make Mistakes

It has recently come to my attention (thanks to one of my customers) that there was an error in the materials list for the basic "Diamonds Bracelet".

Where it states: size 6 seed beads Color B, 11 each, it should say 21 each.

I have corrected the master copy and all patterns sent out in future will include the correction. And, I have added a comment to the "Pattern - Diamonds Jewelry Set" post in hopes that anyone who previously purchased that pattern will see it.

However, since I did not realize this typo, I have been filling kits with an insufficient amount of those beads. Anyone having purchased such a kit and wanting the rest of the beads, please contact me and I will mail you some.

My sincere apologies for this error. I am exceedingly grateful to the customers who let me know of these mistakes. So, please, if ever you purchase one of my patterns or one of my kits and something seems wrong or you do not understand something, CONTACT ME! I do make mistakes. I try to catch them myself, but am not always successful (as you can see). I really do appreciate people letting me know of my mistakes (so I can fix them) and I do not mind answering questions.

Materials and Sources

Soooo.....

KITS-New Angle Bracelet

I have begun to list some kits for the new pattern "New Angle Bracelet". So far, I have listed 2 for Version A (with bugle beads as in the blue bracelet shown in photo above) and 1 for Version B (with faceted crystal rounds as in the lime/yellow bracelet shown in photo below. Customer Results with Diamonds Bracelet Pattern

I have been saving this photo until after I published the upgraded version of "Diamonds" bracelet pattern. The upgrade now includes instructions for Earrings and a Necklace. This customer ("Ihni" - DeviantArt) showed me she had already figured out how to do the Earrings! Great job. I also like how she used the button closure and the large focal beads.

She illustrates the modularity of micro macrame. In other words, you can mix and match the elements of pretty much any pattern. Most of the patterns I write are based on basic knotting schemes with some tips on varying the elements like bead size, adding or omitting rows of beads, etc. The possibilities are near limitless.

Pattern - New Angle Bracelet

I have just finished writing up the pattern for the "New Angle" bracelet! I had planned on saving this one for a book I wanted to write. However, with our precarious situation, I decided to go ahead and write it up now. I will just have to come up with new designs for that book (if I ever the opportunity to write it)!

Simple Elegance. "New Angle" presents an opportunity to practice Double Half-Hitches. Recommended for intermediate knotters or beginners who catch on fast. It is not a complicated design (except the transition to the button hole). It is just a bit tricky getting the knots to be uniform. This pattern includes instructions for Version "A" (the green, red, and gold bracelets with bugle beads) and Version "B" (the lime and yellow bracelet with faceted round focal beads). Materials list is for an 8 inch bracelet.

Pattern - Diamonds Jewelry Set

Finally. Finally I have finished upgrading the "Diamonds" Bracelet Pattern to "Diamonds" Jewelry Set as it now includes instructions for Earrings and a Necklace as well as the bracelet with button closure and with lobster claw clasp. I really hope you all like it.

The Basic Bracelet (with the button closure) is a fairly easy bracelet to make and lots of fun. The Variations include instructions for Bracelet with lobster claw clasp, Earrings, and a Necklace. They are a bit trickier and may require some experience with micro macrame - which you can get with the Basic Bracelet! I also provide tips on varying the cord and the focal beads.

I have already updated my Pattern Shop (at a reduced price and available for immediate download after checkout), my Etsy shop, and my ArtFire shop,

I do have some kits already made up and photographed. Some are for individual pieces (i.e. bracelet, earrings, necklace) and some for the the package deal. I don't think I can get them listed tonight. I will do that tomorrow. I have been busy all day editing photos, making collages, writing, formatting, and updating the pattern listings, I am just plum tuckered out.

Just a Few Lines to Let You Know...

I do realize I am running low on kits in both shops (Etsy and ArtFire). It is because they have been selling pretty well but I have not been able to make a bead order in some time. We ran into some unexpected expenses in Jan and Feb (auto repairs and veterinary bills). Thankfully, we had the "cushion" to pay for it all, but have since needed to replenish that cushion (in case another unexpected expense comes around).

I do have some beads and will be making up what kits I can manage from my stash. Some of the patterns, of course, need particular beads and I am low on many of those. I plan on being able to make a new bead order in the next couple of weeks so I can then make up kits for those patterns that require certain beads.

I briefly considered rebuilding my website over at Google Sites as it had some features I really liked. But Blogger has recently added some features that solve the same problems...So, I am happily staying with Blogger. I do love Blogger and am happy about the new features. I have since given this site a facelift and will continue to work on it in the days and weeks to come. Do you like it so far?

As many of you have probably noticed, I have been posting photos on some new designs...No, I am not planning on writing up patterns for them as yet - I am planning on writing an e-book! This may take some time, but check back from time to time and I will post updates on progress.

This has been a pretty intense year so far! Aside from the auto problems (we ended up getting a second car) and veterinary problems (my fat cat had some health issues), one of my (other) cats was hit and killed by a car a couple of weeks ago, a friend has had some crises and needed my help, and my dear hubbie hurt his back (yes, he is on the mend). As the saying goes "It's always something!"

Well, I guess I should get busy trying to put together some kits...Bye for now

Knot News - Mar 2010

As many of you already know, I have joined Facebook! I am enjoying it far more than I expected. I even got caught up in a couple of games - Farmville and Cafe World. To join me (and hopefully add me as a friend, just look in my sidebar and scroll down till you find the facebook widget with my smiling face). I have also created a page for KnotGypsy Designs. You can find that widget in the sidebar as well and become a fan. Hope to see you all there!

Then, as I was surfing one day, I stumbled upon a new venue - 1000 markets. I checked it out and liked what I saw. It is for handmade items ONLY. No supplies, no patterns, no kits. It is also a "juried" venue which means I had to be approved. So I joined. set up shop, and submitted it for approval. It took about a day of holding my breath, but I was accepted! Today, I found a widget that will allow visitors to this site to share articles from this website on Facebook and on Twitter. Find that widget in the sidebar just under Category listings.

What can I say? I am sure I am forgetting something, but I am getting older and so my memory goes on vacation at times (without me!). I'll write more when and if I remember it. Bye for now, my beads are calling me.

More "New Angle" bracelets

I have been having so much fun with the new design series "New Angle"! I wondered what it would look like to make the double half-hitches go "in-line" rather than as a "cross bar". I also wanted to use some bugle beads...

Well, I think it worked out well as seen in this first bracelet in gold. This one has been listed at my new "1000 markets" shop (will son get around to listing the others as well):

Then, I made a couple of narrower bracelets - in Red and in Green. I also added an extra row of seed beads between rows of bugle beads:

And last but not least, I wanted to try faceted focals instead of the bugle beads. I really love the look of this one. It is a little trickier to knot, but I think it was worth it:

A "New Angle" Design Series

I have been playing with beads again. First, I did a little more experimentation with the concept of "Entrapped" with this pair of earrings. My friend's daughter says they look like "Acorns", so that is what I will call them.

Then, I had to see what would happen if I finished the "Wavy Diamonds" earring with fringe instead of a "drop".

Then, I got ambitious and began playing around with a new design -"New Angle".

First, a prototype - This collar necklace in blue and purple was just beginning. I tried a small progression in stringing the "centerpiece" and it just does not quite do it for me. But, I do love the colors and the basic concept. Here is the prototype:

Then, a Choker, using a more aggressive progression in stringing that "centerpiece" and making it wider with 3 colors of cord and beads, here is what I came up with. I am quite happy with this one.

I am hoping to write an e-book (possibly for hard copy as well if I can find a publisher). My plans are to include this design in the book along with several other ideas I have in mind. This could take me awhile, so please be patient.

Knot News - "Waves" Bracelet Class in Gig Harbor

Wavy Diamonds - New Hybrid Design Series

So, I was going through my stash and came across some "Waves" earring kits that had not sold. I had set them aside thinking I would make up some matching bracelet kits...well, I didn't have quite enough of the right beads to do that.

I decided I would watch some old "Dharma and Greg" videos and make the earrings up myself. As I was nearing the finish to this first pair (see next photo below), it occurred to me that a better finish would be to use the knotting sequence of the "Diamonds" series.

I thought it worked great and went on to try some variations...

First, this pair with a slightly different knotted "diamond" and a slightly different "tail".

And a "Waves" bracelet to match

Another color and with a bead embedded in the "diamond"

Then this pair with slightly different beads...Okay, I was excited now and wondered what this would look like with fringe beads in the "waves".

Then, I thought "What if I make a matching bracelet that includes the "Diamonds" motif instead of the original "Waves" style bracelet? I loved it!:

Two more variations, the second one in photo has bugle beads! I love bugle beads and am always trying to fit them in somewhere...

Then, I wondered if size 6 seed beads would work as well as the fringe beads in the "waves"? The answer is YES! I love these, too. The look sort of "Deco Victorian" to me. My Sweetie especially likes these earrings and the bracelet and necklace that followed.

Micro Macrame Board/Pad

A customer of mine just found the perfect pad for making micro macame jewelry. She graciously shared it with me and I am sharing it with you! She uses a gardening kneeling pad...

I was worried about what I would use when my beloved Puzzle brand mouse pad wore out. (It is pretty worn out now). Luckily, my hubbie had some really thick, really firm foam rubber and cut it to size for me. If not for that, I would be buying one of these kneeling pads.

At 15" x 12.5", it is a great size to place in your lap. At 3/4 inches thick, it is thick enough to grip those pins you stick in it. Find it at Amazon.com (link below) or perhaps at your local gardening supply store.

Entrapped - A New Bracelet Design

Several years ago, I experimented with knotting "in the round" but, had some problems making it work. So, I set it aside...

These past few days, I have resurrected the idea and this time it worked out! I started with the lovely lampwork bead that my sister made. (She just started bead making this year and sent me several samples). Then I had some undrilled agates that I wanted to "entrap" to give form and a subtle "shining through" to the bracelet.

I even experimented with the structure of the button-hole as you can see in this photo (below). I knotted "in the round" for part of the way so as to blend in with the rest of the bracelet.

Of course, as I made this bracelet, I came up with several ideas to improve it...more on that later as I get examples made up.

Victorian Lace and Christmas Sparkle

So, I was sitting there contemplating Christmas...and I thought "I bet the Victorian Lace series would look great in Christmas colors" and so these are my results.

I tried twice to make the matching bracelet. Alas, it has been so long since I made one of those I forgot how long to cut the cord. Although I cut it longer the second time, it was still too short! Of course, I did not discover this until halfway through the bracelet (both times) when I noticed I was running out of cord. So, take heart, even experienced knotters make mistakes.

Then, because I was so disgusted with myself, I had to set that project aside for awhile. I just could not face it again so soon.

And, you guessed it, I am working on creating a pattern for the necklace. It is still in the development stage, though. I have not even photographed the steps yet. Had to work out some kinks in the design first.

The concept is similar to the one I used for the Fans Necklace. So, those of you who have been making that set, may be able to figure out how to do this one...let me know if you do. I'd be happy to publish any results you achieve as well.

This blue one was actually the first set I made. The one in red (above) was the result of correcting a few of those kinks I mentioned and because it's color scheme, I felt it should have place of honor at the top.

Criss Cross Bracelet Kits

Okay. Because we are having a cold spell down here in South Central Texas (We might even get a few snowflakes this week!), I tried to photograph the "Criss Cross Bracelet" kits inside with some daylight bulbs. I was not satisfied as there was just too much orange in the photos of the red kits. So I braved the cold wind and went outside to photograph them.

Then I listed them at my two online stores(ArtFire Studio and Etsy Shop). All the kits (at both online stores) are priced at $4.00 and include the pattern. So, if you are getting a kit, save some money and don't purchase the pattern separately!

Criss Cross Bracelet Pattern

Finally, it is done! I have been trying for weeks and weeks to get this pattern finished. It seemed that every time I planned on working on it, something else came up.
Elegant yet flirty, this micro macrame bracelet is not too difficult to make (mostly Square Knots with some Lark's Head and OverHand knots.) It has a bead & loop closure and so can be made with no metal parts!

Instructions for a Button Closure for Fans Bracelet

I received an email request from a customer for instructions on making a button closure for the "Fans Bracelet". She said that button closures were easier to make in terms of the nimbleness required. I agree. Those Lark's Head knots onto the ring for the lobster claw clasp can take some practice and a delicate touch.

So, I photographed and wrote up some instructions.

Carol's Dream of Waves Bracelet

Well, I think I am finally getting to know about all the features offered at ArtFire. And, I must say I am quite impressed.

First of all, I need to mention that the "Basic Membership" does not include all the features, but for the holiday season at least, you will get unlimited listings.

I went ahead and signed up for the "Verified Member" account. It is only $12.00 per month no matter how many listings or how many sales you make. Sweet.

What I love (Verified Member account):

The many ways you can customize your "Studio". I will play more with different banners later as I am still busy setting up and getting everything listed. This feature allows you to make your shop your own.

The "ArtFire Kiosk" that allows people to buy directly from my Facebook page. The "Rapid Cart" feature that allows people to buy directly from this website (see sidebar).

Okay. I have tested E-Junkie and it seems to work.

For now, I have placed the new "Fans Necklace and Earrings" along with the "Fans Bracelet" patterns in the sidebar with "add to cart" and "view cart" buttons. You may now purchase them there and be directed to download right after paying. No more waiting for me to check my email and send you your pattern! And, since I don't have to do any emailing, they are at a lower price than found in My Etsy Shop or my ArtFire Studio.

I have begun listing "Fans" kits (with the patterns, so don't buy the pattern here if you want the pattern and the kit) over at my ArtFire Studio.

Fans Necklace and Earrings Pattern and a Test

I have revised/rewritten the Fans Earrings pattern for clarity and to include the instructions for the necklace as well. Here's the blurb:

This striking micro macrame design is simple in conception, but needs a bit of practice to master. Necklace and Earrings nicely match the "Fans Bracelet". Recommended Skill Level: Intermediate (some knotting and beading experience helpful).

This design primarily uses Double Half-Hitch knots with Lark's Head knots at the beginning and ending. The trickiest parts are beginning, ending, and determining how many seed beads to use per strand. It is all covered in the instructions with plenty of photos.

The instructions and materials lists are written for the "Two Tone" version (see earrings on right side of photo above), but a tip is provided under "Variations" (at end of pattern) on how to do the "Speckled" version (see necklace and earrings on left side of photo above). Also under "Variations" are suggestions for varying the "tail" or "drop" segments.

Knot News - Some Changes on the Way

Remember "Fans Earrings get a Facelift"? You know where I went crazy and had a lot of fun with making up different "tails" for the Fans Earrings? Well, my craziness did not end there.

I got busy and figured out a design for matching necklaces to "Fans", "Diamonds" and a hybrid "Diamond Fans". Photo above shows the results of my labor of love.

Then, I got to work on patterns for the new hybrid and the necklaces, and they all inter-related, and my brain got locked up. Finally last night, my brain unlocked a bit and I have nearly finished the pattern for "Fans Necklace and Earrings".

I have revised, rewritten and reorganized the old pattern for the earrings and integrated the new necklace into it. I should have it out next week - just a few finishing touches, a couple of photos, and formatting to go.

I will then begin work on the others. I also have most of the photography done for the "Criss Cross Bracelet and Earrings" and will hopefully be able to write it up as well in the coming weeks.

I'll save the rest of the photos for when the patterns are finished. After all, I need something to post with their introduction to the internet, don't I?

Remember "Testing a new process"? Well that version did not work, but I think I may have found the solution in another site - e-Junkie! Apparently, they provide storage for pdf documents and "buy now" and "add to cart" buttons so you can sell your documents from your website. This is exactly what I was looking for. So, when I get the new pattern finished, I will test out this new "e-Junkie" system with it.

So then, I joined Facebook so I could play Scrabble with an old Friend who lives in another state and so I could view her photos of her kitties. I am a sucker for kitties as my eight can attest to! I was happily surprised to find an acquaintance on Facebook as well and was perusing her page last night when I saw that she had signed up for a store on ArtFire...

I checked it out, was impressed and now KnotGypsy Has a New ArtFire Store! It is a great deal - free with the Basic Membership. Even though I have not written much lately, you can see that I have been busy. I even listed a few more kits in my Etsy Shop. And, yes, I will be keeping my Etsy Shop as it has been very good to me. I am not sure how I will be dividing up my inventory between them, I suspect that will be a journey of discovery as well.

Time to get back to work, or perhaps I will just sit back and admire my progress so far.

Testing a new process

Aug 11, afternoon: Notice: I have put the test on hold temporarily - Had one success and two failures and so I must try to figure out what went wrong and try again. Thanks to those who participated.

Wouldn't it be great if you could buy a pattern and immediately after checkout, get sent directly to the document where you could download it? It would save you from having to wait, and it would save me time spent on emailing. More time to put together some kits...write more patterns...make more jewelry!

Well, Google has recently added the feature of being able to upload pdf documents and the ability to share them with anyone, whether or not they have a Google account.

So, I am running a test. I made a "Buy Now" PayPal button for "Waves Bracelet Pattern". I have placed it in the sidebar right under "About". For the purposes of this test, I am offering the pattern for only $1.00.

If it works, you should be sent directly to the pdf document after checkout. You should be able to view it, print it, or download it from there.

Fans Earrings get a Facelift

So, I was re-organizing my shop and kits...

I had previously listed matching kits for Fans Earrings and Fans Bracelets... the bracelet kits sold, but some of the earrings kits did not. Hmmm...

I thought I might play with them a little. All of the following earrings were worked exactly according to the basic pattern, except when I got to the end, I just strung on a few more beads.

For these first three, I strung on:

1 size 8 seed bead, 1 6mm focal, 1 size 8 seed bead, 1 8mm focal, and ended with a size 8 seed bead.

(Some focals were Czech fire-polished faceted rounds and some were glass rounds, each giving a different look to the earrings.)

For this pair:

1 size 8 seed bead, 1 6mm focal, 1 size 8 seed bead, 1 10mm focal, and ended with a size 8 seed bead.

For this pair, I used:

1 size 8 seed bead, 1 20mmx9.5mm teardrop. and 1 size 8 seed bead.

And, for a bit more drama:

1 size 8 seed bead, 1 6mm focal, 1 size 8 seed bead, 1 20mmx9.5mm teardrop. and 1 size 8 seed bead. (These are my favorites.)

Then, I upgraded the rest of those lonely earrings kits with what beads I had lying around (waiting for my next bead order to come in) and have begun listing them at my Etsy Shop. Just check the "Kits with Patterns" section to find them. See "Fans Earrings Pattern" for more info.

Knot News - Reorganization

Okay.

I have just finished making some changes:

I was selling my patterns and kits separately, but several people over the past year or so have mistakenly bought just a kit (without a pattern). So, all my kits now include the pattern (at a discount). I hope this clears up some confusion. Not to worry, patterns are still available without kits.

In these tough economic times, I am trying to find ways to offer some good deals. In pursuit of this, I have begun some bundling in the form of "Package Deals". For example, You will now find it possible to buy both patterns "Lacy Ripples Bracelet" and "Victorian Lace Earrings" together for a bit of savings. Or, find kits like "Waves Bracelet and Earrings" (pattern included) for one great price.

It is a bit of a challenge to minimize possibilities for confusion and I try my best. So, please if you are ever confused, don't hesitate to contact me. (See profile).

Well, I need to get back to work and put together some more kits. Lately, they have been rather popular. I understand. When times get tough, many of us turn to learning how to "Do it Yourself". In support of that, I am going to focus harder on getting some new patterns out and more kits made up...

Arrow Bracelet Pattern

Finally, it is done. I have finished the pattern for "Arrow Bracelet".

Fun to make and so beautiful!

Although based on my "Diamonds Bracelet Pattern", this "Arrow Bracelet Pattern" is a bit more intricate. So, this pattern is recommended for intermediate knotters/beaders. (Some knotting and beading experience would be helpful.)

I provide instructions for the basic 7" bracelet, including a variation of motif and tips on making smaller and longer bracelets. You could even make a choker!

Variations

The Basic Bracelet has focal beads in the center of the "diamond" segments:

Variation 2 has no focal bead in the "diamond" segments, but a lattice-like motif instead:

I am trying something new with this pattern. I am using the html format to save the document and so it will open in your browser instead of in pdf format to open in Adobe Reader. I can sent it zipped or unzipped. For those with email accounts that have limits on attachments, I can provide access to the url where the document lives a private life. (I just add their email address to the "approved viewers" list. ) It can be printed or saved from there.

EDIT: Oh well, it was a good idea, but I think I should stick to Pdf format as the html requires a bit more computer savvy than some people may have. So to keep it simple for my customers, I will remain with the pdf version unless requested otherwise. Easy enough as I have both versions saved. For those with email accounts that have limits on attachments, I can still provide access to the url where the document lives a private life.

On to the next pattern: "Criss Cross Bracelet and Earrings". I have it set up, but am unsure when I can get it finished, so no promises today.

Knot News - Update on New Pattern and Some Ramblings

Well, I have not yet finished the new "Arrow Bracelet Pattern", however I am almost there! All I have left is about half of the text...and proofreading. I even have some kits made up and waiting in the wings! They should all be ready and listed within the next two days (probably tomorrow, but you know how these things go...)

I have recently signed up for Scribd. It is a site where you can upload documents. So I uploaded my free patterns, "Spirals Anklet or Bracelet" and "Spirals KeyChain". From what I understand, you can publish those documents (which I have done), or you can make them private and allow only those you want to have access. Of the published documents, viewers can rate the documents with a thumbs up or a thumbs down. There is even a Scribd store where you can sell your documents. I am giving it a try. It may be another venue to sell my patterns and get exposure for my website. A woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do. So if anyone belongs to Scribd, go check out the two free patterns and give them a thumb's up...

I do have some other designs waiting to be written up into patterns and there is that book I have been wanting to write...I better get busy, Talk to ya'll later.

Knot News - Update on New Pattern and More Kits

Okay. I got distracted by several things.

First, one of my older cats had to have all her back teeth pulled (gum disease) and of course I had to nurse her back to health. She is doing great now, she is eating just fine and gaining some weight back. She still has her front teeth so she can bite us, she just cannot chew us up!

Then, I still have the ongoing business of taking care of my new garden. I am having fun, but it does take up some of my time.

And, a friend has been going through a rough patch and has needed some of my time.

This is just to mention a few things. Seems that just when you have your plans made, Life has a way of changing them!

But, I did get some kits made up this week and am listing them in My Etsy Shop. I am hoping to get back on that "Arrow Bracelet" pattern early next week...if all goes well.

Also, My Sweetie is having some medical problems (hopefully minor) and will be getting some tests done soon. As a result, we will be needing to cover the expenses. Health care is not what it used to be - nowadays it is more of a "discount" system than any kind of real coverage what with the co-pay, the deductible, and having to pay a further percentage of the total. I remember the days when you either had an HMO where all you paid was a co-pay or you had the kind of coverage where you paid a percentage.

So, I am working on putting together a SALE in My Etsy Shop to generate (hopefully) some cash. Keep checking back for more details as I finalize this plan (probably next week).

Knot News - A Delay with the New Pattern

Just to let everyone know that there will be a delay with getting the new pattern for "Arrow Bracelet" out. I did not like the photos and will be redoing the entire thing. It may take a few weeks as I am still putting in some garden...and I got a new food dehydrator (Excaliber brand) and am drying some early harvest.

Also, please bear with me as I re-organize my Etsy Shop - tonight I am getting all my kits together to see what new ones I need to put together and whether or not new photos need to be taken as well. So, I may be short some kits until I get this project finished. I will probably get it done over the weekend...I got a new Netflix dvd (Stargate SG1) in and will work in front of the TV...

Later, in conjunction with creating the new pattern (mentioned above), I will be editing and revising all my patterns in order to streamline the process.

Ahhh, always so much to do! Keeps me from getting bored, though.

Book Review - Micro Macrame...

I first encountered Annika through her blog "Annika's Atelier" right after I started this blog. She makes all kinds of beautiful things (not just micro macrame). We corresponded a bit back and forth over the next couple of years, checking into each other's blogs upon occasion. I found her to be a delightful and talented woman.

Recently, she contacted me to review her new book. I accepted right away and she sent me an advance copy.

At first glance, I fell in love. What a lovely book with 30 projects in varying degrees of difficulty and a wide variety of projects - from bracelets to ornaments, from victorian to deco - Something for everyone!

Then, this weekend, I had a chance to delve deeper. You know, try one of the projects to see how the instructions worked out. (And, yes, I could not wait to make one of her designs for my own personal use!)

I made the "Stained Glass Bracelet" without too much trouble, as you can see below. (I did lose track of where I was in the middle - I was watching Stargate SG1 and got distracted - but it was not the fault of the instructions).

I had one question which she answered right away and said that anyone buying her book could contact her through her website or her blog and she would be happy to answer any questions.

I really cannot say enough about this book. It has beautiful photos, is well written and would provide anyone (beginner or expert) with plenty of projects and inspiration for quite some time...and isn't that really what it is all about?

Knot News - New Pattern on the Way

I know, I know, I have not written much for awhile. I have been busy with gardening chores. I have been trying to learn to garden (since last year) and since we get an early start on Spring down here in Texas....I have been starting seedlings, digging, and planting. I have even gotten to harvest some lettuce, parsley, and beets already.

Okay, on with the news.

In light of these touch economic times, I have lowered the prices of almost all my patterns! I am calling it my "After Taxes Sale". Eventually, I am going to re-organize my Etsy Shop...when I can find the time...because right now I am in the middle of writing another pattern - "Arrow Bracelet" (see photo above for preview).

Fire Mountain Gems has in some lovely acrylic beads in flat rounds, flat ovals, and some other flat shapes in sizes that are great for the "Spirals KeyChain"! Yay! I had begun to despair of finding any acrylic beads in flat shapes in large enough sizes for the KeyChain pattern. This means we can go back to using the original pattern with the alternating half-hitch chain along the sides of the focal bead. They are really quite beautiful. One of my customers has really done some beautiful work with some of my patterns. Check out her work at Parlugglans Smycken. The first one appears to be based on my "Waves Bracelet" and the others on "Diamonds Bracelet". She has made the patterns her own in the best creative tradition. Congratulations!

She has asked if it is allright to sell pieces she has made from my patterns as long as she gives credit to me as the designer. I am fine with that. I only ask that my patterns not be re-sold.

Victorian Lace EARRINGS

I got busy beading this past weekend. I started out just using up some scraps of cord and these Victorian Lace earrings are just the thing. They don't require a lot of cord and so scraps left over from larger projects work perfectly.

But, then, I was having so much fun, I decided to try the pattern with some Omega nylon crochet thread...

These last two are my favorites, I think. I will be keeping the green and purple ones. After all, I deserve some new bling don't I?

Spirals Anklet or Bracelet PATTERN

This is a simple but elegant design in micro macrame, making it good for Beginners. The most difficult aspect to this project is in stringing 4 strands of cord through the 8mm focal beads. I provide a tip for doing this in the instructions .

Knots used: Mostly Half-Knots with a few Lark's Head Knots, Square Knots, and OverHand Knots.

Materials Needed: 8mm faceted Czech fire-polished rounds, size 11 seed beeds, C-lon nylon cord, and a button. You will also need a work surface (i.e. cork board, old style Puzzle Pad mouse pad, etc) pins, scissors, clear fingernail polish and glue.

Once mastered, this design provides plenty of room for creativity. By varying the different design aspects like color, shape (of beads), spacing, etc., you can create your own "Spirals" designs! You can also vary the tassel, go wild if you want! This one simple design has a multitude of possibilities. I hope you have fun finding them.

Serpentine Bracelet Pattern

Finally, I have finished this pattern. I have been distracted by politics and gardening. A customer recently expressed that she would love to have the pattern for this bracelet. Well, that gave me some motivation and I got it done. As soon as I finish posting this, I will list it in My Etsy Shop under "Patterns".

This bracelet is a lot of fun to make. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty easy. It is not so much complicated, as it just takes a little practice getting the hang of the knots - mostly Double Half-Hitches with a few Lark's Head Knots. Basic Pattern instructions are for the top bracelet in photo above. Materials list is for an 8 inch bracelet.

Bottom bracelet in photo above shows a couple of ways to vary the "wedges" with different beads. Instructions found at bottom of pattern under "Variations".

Tapestry Bracelet Kits

I spent last evening putting together some Tapestry Bracelet Kits. I have listed two in my Etsy Shop already and will be listing two more later this evening.

I have also been working on developing one of the two new designs shown in previous post. I will soon be starting work on photographing and writing up the patterns for both those two new designs.

One Thing Leads to Another

The last time I ordered beads, I ordered some of these fringe beads. I love these little "raindrops" of glass. I have been wanting to try them for quite some time. Well, I finally got around to using some.

First, I tried them in a variation of my basic "Fans" pattern. Viola! "Frilly Fans". With the cream bracelet, I omitted the row of delicas (in between the rows of Double Half-Hitches) and used hex-cut size 6's seed beads in the corners. I put fringe beads in the two outer strands.
With the green bracelet, I omitted the size 6's and put size 11's in the corners. This brings the "fans" closer together.
As I gazed at the cream bracelet, I wondered how it would look to change the alignment of the Double Half-Hitches...and came up with a new design! "Serpentine".

Yes, I will be writing this one up as a new pattern. However, it may take me a few weeks as I have a lot on my "To Do" list right now.

I really wish I had ordered more fringe beads!

Because, I love these beads so much...I experimented some more and came up with another design. This one is still in the development stage, but I will give you a sneak peek:
This design needs a name. Any suggestions?

Key Chains Galore

I bought some more of those plastic beads at Walmart yesterday. So, I had to make up some key chains. I love making them as they work up so fast - I get to see results right away! And I do love these fobs. I think they make great fobs for pulls on ceiling fans as well...

Since those nice flat beads are becoming so hard to find, I decided I wanted to show how these fobs can be made with other shapes. You just have to eliminate 1 strand of cord and the Half-Hitch Chains on my original pattern. There are all kinds of ways to vary these fobs, especially in the tassels.

In Search of the Perfect System

I am ever in search of the Perfect System. Right now the Perfect System I am trying to achieve is the one for listing kits in my Etsy Shop.

I have been working on Standardizing my kits and have made progress on that. Now, when I make up kits, I make up a couple in each color. Then I list one of each and re-list as they sell. That is working pretty good. I am saving some time in photography and in listing.

Today, I worked on Standardizing my system for listing. Previously, I have been posting the photo of the kit's contents as the first photo. But there is nothing to really distinguish one kit from all the rest. No good visual cues.

My Solution:

Beginning with the Diamonds Bracelet Kits I made up this weekend, I am listing them under a new system. I made an "icon" photo (see photo at top of this post). I am using it as the icon photo (first photo in listing) for all "KIT - Diamonds Bracelet" kits. That way, one can see at a glance that the listing is for that pattern. This will come in handy when I begin to make kits for some of the variations like "Frilly Fans" (based on Fans Bracelet Pattern).

I will be incorporating this system as I make and list more kits. Once the new system is fully in operation, it will be easier to browse my "Kits" section and see at a glance what kind of kits are listed. I hope this helps cut down confusion.

Here's another tip for finding a specific kit at my Etsy shop. Once you are at my Etsy home page, find "search" box at top. Type in KIT - Name of pattern (i.e. KIT - Diamonds Bracelet). That should get you a search results list of all "diamonds bracelet"(for example) kits.

Skill Levels

I recently listed all 8 patterns for one low price (savings of $7.00).

Today, I received a question regarding the skill level for each pattern. Oops. I forgot to put that in the description. I had it in the individual listings...well, now it is in this package listing, too. This brought me to think I should post the information here so it will be in one spot.

Determining skill level has been a challenge, I must admit. I call on anyone who has tried any of my patterns to add their input in "comments" at the end of this post. I am not very objective on this topic because I have been doing micro macrame for over 10 years and it is sometimes hard to remember what was difficult and what was easy.

In general, macrame is not that difficult to learn in terms of complexity. It just takes practice getting the knots to be uniform. I work hard to make my patterns easy to understand with plenty of photos.

Okay, Here is my assessment of the skill level of each pattern:

1. Spirals Anklet (as seen in Step by Step Bead Magazine) - Beginner. Mostly made of Half Knots (with a few Lark's Head Knots and an Overhand Knot).

2. Waves Bracelet (includes instructions for matching earrings) - Beginner. Mostly made of Square Knots.

3. Fans Bracelet - Intermediate. Mostly Double Half Hitches and some Lark's Head Knots. Tricky parts include determining number of beads per strand and performing Lark's Head knots into a split ring (at the end).

4. Fans Earrings - Intermediate. Same as for Fans Bracelet.

5. Lacy Ripples Bracelet - Intermediate. Mostly made of Lark's Head Knots and Double Half Hitches. Tricky part is alternating between the two types of knots.

6. Victorian Lace Earrings - Intermediate. Same as for Lacy Ripples bracelet.

7. Tapestry Bracelet - Intermediate. Mostly made of Double Half Hitches. Trickiest part is keeping track of where you are.

8. Diamonds Bracelet - Basic bracelet, Beginner. The variations are a bit trickier. Mostly made of Double Half-Hitches.

9. Serpentine Bracelet - Beginner to Intermediate. Not so much complicated, but needs some practice getting the hang of the knots (mostly Double Half-Hitches and a few Lark's Head Knots).

Somebody Told Murphy on Me

Okay. So, I got the second computer set up. The one a friend gave me. It was working just fine, even got that copy of Windows XP installed and everything. But, I think someone told Murphy (of Murphy's Law) that I was having some things go well....

So. Murphy can't have that. Turns out that the reason the power supply was out on that computer was because the motherboard was bad...So, now a new power supply, new motherboard, and a new CPU, and yes, new RAM are installed and I indeed have a mostly new computer now. The only thing I did not have to replace was the hard drive and the case! Oh well.

But that is not all. We had ordered the aforementioned parts and they arrived last Friday. On Saturday, we were set to build the computer. Actually my Sweetie is the techie and I just help.

On Saturday morning I got the telltale visual "aura" of a migraine. Drat. I really hate those. I took a pain pill to forestall the headache and muddled through the day. I tried a few times to nap, but could not sleep much. I just can't seem to take naps - can't sleep.

Luckily my Sweetie did most of the work and late that night he turned it over to me to install Windows XP...that part went well, but then, I got another "aura". I have never had two in the same day before. Probably because of menopause, my hormones are confused these days. Oh well, I got to sleep most of this second one off as it was nearly time for bed anyway.

Sunday, I got the computer connected to the internet and of course downloaded my favorite internet software - Firefox (browser), AVG (anti-virus ), and ZoneAlarm (firewall) - all FREE and all GREAT. Late that night, I got another "aura". Now, this was getting tiresome. It really takes a lot out of me even when I just get the "aura". It leaves me befuddled - my right brain seems fine, but my left brain (logic) not so much. Okay, time will pass and it will go away.

I recuperated a bit on Monday, just felt like I had been through the wringer. Then, Tuesday, I got another one! I am getting nervous now. I don't usually get migraines very often - every couple of months or so and never before have I gotten so many "auras" in one week. I think menopause may be arriving with a bang. Thanks be to the Universe (HaHa).

I relate my migraines to my hormones because: I first got migraines during puberty (about 2-3 times a month). Then, they settled into a schedule of once a month...dwindling over the years to almost never. So, I gathered they were related to hormones. Some people get migraines triggered by foods, but mine never seemed to fall into that pattern - yes, I tested with various foods said to be triggers. I thank all that is holy that chocolate was not a trigger of migraines for me. What would I do without chocolate? In fact, chocolate seems to help.

Well, I am getting older and a few years ago, the migraines began to make a comeback. They are becoming more frequent and it would make sense for them to be connected to hormones (for me anyway) as both puberty and menopause are both times of hormonal changes.

So, I am subsequently behind on several of my projects. Until I have recuperated a bit more, I am just not able to concentrate enough to work on them. Hopefully, tomorrow, I will be back up to speed. Now, I think I will go eat some of that chocolate...

Inspired Variations

Another customer of mine, Janine Kloubert of www.BeadDust.com in Germany, has graciously given me permission to post photos of her work. I think she has done a wonderful job!

This first one "Achat" is inspired by my "Waves Bracelet" pattern. She has substituted a button closure for the lobster claw and used smaller beads on the "spine" of the piece - giving front stage to the lovely gemstone chips along the sides.

And, this beautiful matching necklace "Achat2" was also inspired by "Waves Bracelet"...but she took it to a whole 'nother level!

Another beautiful piece "Eisprinzessin" (Ice Princess) inspired by "Waves Bracelet"...

This last one "Lila Welle" was inspired by my "Fans Bracelet" pattern. I love the transparent matte beads and the way she plays with the two colors...
I so love to receive photos of my customer's work! I love how they take the basic patterns and make them their own. That is the spirit of creativity.

I did it! I finally finished the "Diamonds Bracelet" Pattern. This pattern includes the instructions for the Basic Bracelet (with the button closure) and instructions for 3 variations. Included in those variations are instructions for a lobster claw clasp. The basic bracelet (with the button closure) is fairly easy to make.

What a week. I got the Windows XP for my "new" computer and got it installed. I then got it online and downloaded FireFox (my favorite browser) and AVG Virus protection (another favorite). I am still having some problems with audio, but my Sweetie promises to help me with that this weekend. I had to get a new computer desk for it and make room for it...you know how it is when you live with a pack rat - no room. Well, I found a corner and brought my retro wooden desk from a back room and made myself a "corner office". I call it my "Command Center" and threatened my Sweetie with "dire consequences" if he piled anything up in my area. I think he understands.

Awesome Micro Macrame

I have been admiring "Grannyx's" (Jeanne Wertman) work for about a year. She does some incredible micro macrame and other hand work.

She recently tried one of my patterns "Fans Bracelet" and the above photo is her result. I am honored by this piece.

In her words: "Here is one of the ones I made....as you can see I like the little dangle's you show on some of your others...I think it's a good way to end the cords." So, she likes dangles/tassels, too. They are a bit of fun, don't you think?

Murphy Strikes Again

Wouldn't you just know it? I set a goal to have the new pattern finished in a week. Then, one thing after another gets in the way!

This week, we have been having some computer troubles. Nothing devastating, thankfully, but dealing with these troubles is annoying and time consuming We think we are getting close to needing to reformat the hard drive...

On a positive note, we have been putting together a second computer. A friend gave us a tower that only needed a power supply. And, because my Sweetie is a computer geek who never throws anything away, we had a perfectly good power supply in an older defunct computer. We also had an older monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I have just ordered a copy of Windows XP for it and should be online with my "new" computer soon. (Shhh. Don't tell Murphy).

Then, because we live on the outskirts of Hurricane Dolly's range, we have had a few thunderstorms this week. Nothing serious, but we live in a house with a tin roof and have lost computers to lightning before. And, even though we have our computer hooked up to an uninterrupted power supply with surge protection, I don't trust my computer to a Texas thunderstorm. I turn off everything and unplug it to be safe. Safe, but it cuts into my time on the computer when I could have been working on the new pattern.

Even so, I have done some work on the new pattern. I have finished the text and formatting for the basic pattern. I have begun uploading the photography for the "variations" segment and will hopefully get it finished next week.

Have a great weekend, do something fun. I am going to watch Cirque de Soleil's Dralion (rented from Netflix) with my Sweetie...bye for now.

New Pattern Coming Soon

I am currently working on my next pattern - "Diamonds Bracelet". I got the photography done last week and thought I would have the pattern ready in just a few days. Well, ummm, I guess I am not so good at estimating how long something will take.

I now have all the photography edited and about 1/3 of the text written. Then the pattern will need to be formatted for pdf...so, I now estimate it will take me at least another week to complete this project. I hope it will take less, but...I am trying to learn my lesson.

To anyone I previously told that this pattern should be ready in "a few days", I apologize.

This pattern will be comprised of two separate pdf documents - "Diamonds Bracelet" and "Diamonds Variations". The basic pattern is written for the button closure and uses heavier cord and no large focal beads. "Variations" will include instructions for closure with lobster claw clasp as well as using larger focal beads and C-lon cord.

While I was playing with this design for pattern making, I could not resist using the motif for a necklace to match one of the Diamonds Bracelets. Some of my cords ran short as I got to the centerpiece and I had to creatively work them out. As always, the prototype teaches me what works and what doesn't. I think my next one (whenever I get around to it) will be much better. In fact, I am hoping to make an improved set for the Fire Mountain Gems annual beading contest.

Well, I guess I should get back to work on writing that text...

Tapestry Bracelet Kits

KIT - Tapestry Bracelet - Cream Soda

Well, I did get around to putting together some kits. I have listed 4 Tapestry Bracelet kits and 2 Spirals Anklet kits. I am continuing to work on standardizing my kit assembly process so I can save some time - time I can spend on producing more patterns.

I have also been busy trying to learn to garden. What with the cost of food on the rise, I thought a garden might be nice. I have done some gardening in the past, but really I am an amateur. So many things to do, never enough time...

Just a Few Lines...

I am posting just a few lines to let you all know:

That I have been busy this week helping out a friend who recently underwent oral surgery. I am back home as of last evening...then as I was getting ready for bed, one of my migraines struck. Luckily I was already headed for bed and was able to sleep off most of it. Today, I am in the tail end and so will not be able to get back to work as I had planned.

I have kept an eye on orders and so have been able to get them shipped out. However, I have not had time to put together any more kits...

The article in Step By Step Bead magazine seems to have increased business for me and so getting those kits together is a priority on my "To Do" list. Hopefully soon, I will be able to list some at My Etsy Shop.

I Have Been Published!

I am so excited. My Spirals Anklet Pattern has been published in Step by Step Beads magazine (Jul/Aug 2008 issue). I received my copies in today's mail.

Of course, the first thing I did was show my hubby and then called my mother. Sorry, Mom, you were second only because you were not here.

Then, I called several friends.

I have never been published before and I really want to milk this one!

I am Standardizing my Kits

With 8 patterns (so far), I am finding it time consuming to keep kits in my shop. Up until now, I have put kits together based on what I had on hand at the time. It takes time to decide what beads and cords to use and it takes time to photograph them...

I have decided to standardize my kits. I am working towards having a standard set of about 10 kits per pattern. I will save time on photography as each kit will only need to be photographed once. As a kit sells, I can just refill it with the same colors of beads and cord. I will save time on listing. As a kit sells, I can just relist it.

This system will eliminate some of the creative color combinations, but the efficiency of it will help keep costs down. I figure that once someone decides they like a particular pattern, they can experiment with color combinations to their heart's content.

The Button Drawer

When I lived in Austin, I got my buttons at Hancock Fabrics. The had such a great selection.

Alas, I now live 50 miles away and it is not so convenient to go there for buttons. So, the past few years, I have been getting most of my buttons at Walmart. Walmart has been cutting back on their sewing department and their selection of buttons is sadly lacking.

So. I went surfing for an online source. I chose to try The Button Drawer and have just received my first order from them. They have a wonderful selection. I bought a sampling of various buttons so I could get an idea of their quality. I am happy with their quality and I am very happy with their fast delivery. Their prices are reasonable and I will probably order from them again. The only drawback to their site is that the photos of their black buttons are not very clear. But, I do know the difficulty of photographing black items! - So, I will not hold it against them.

Now, I need to get some kits put together...bye for now.

Full Circle

I have come full circle. Since I began my online jewelry adventure, I have tried several website variations, only to return to Blogger. I am happy to be back. I realize I may sound a bit "eccentric", shall we say; but I feel as if I have come home.

Blogger is very easy to maintain and that is a big plus. Now, that I have the frustration of getting my domain name to point to this blog all behind me, all is well.

Actually, Blogger has not that often been difficult for me. When I bought the domain name for KnotGypsy's Kitchen Chronicles, I bought it through Google and I had no headaches at all. Google has everything automated through GoDaddy (where the domain is registered).

I ran into problems with this blog because I had my domain registered at Bravenet and had to handle the configuration myself. I had additional problems because I had used the domain name with another website and the configuration retained some of those settings. I am not much of a techie, so I did not realize I needed to get rid of those settings. I did not even know what they were for!

Live and Learn. Sometimes we jump over the fence because the grass looks greener only to find that, actually, we had just left the greener grass! So, we try to return.

A few years ago, I sent some jewelry to a friend to put in her seamstress shop. Her business has grown and she no longer has room to keep my jewelry on consignment. She has returned it to me along with several pieces of display equipment! What a friend!

So, for another return to a beginning, I decided to post photos of some of these older pieces (including the photo above). These bracelets and matching earrings were the results of my experiments with my "Lattice" series. I will be listing them at my Etsy Shop (at a discount) over the next several days. So, keep checking.

Nothing is Ever Easy!

The Blogger Help instructions, "How do I use a custom domain name on my blog?", for publishing to a custom domain name seemed so simple...

However, I cannot seem to get it to work. I followed the instructions "How do I create a CNAME record for my custom domain" and created the CNAME record 2 days ago. Then, whenever I change my Blogger publishing settings to reflect the custom domain name and try to access my blog, I get "DNS not configured - no match was found".

Some of you who tried to view my blog over the past 24 hours probably got the same error message....sorry. I left those settings in hopes that as time passed, the DNS servers would update and reflect these changes. I have decided to switch the Blogger settings back to the "blogspot" url for now. At least the blog can now be accessed.

I have been searching the "help" forums both on Google and Bravenet (where I have my domain name registered), to no avail. I cannot seem to figure out what the problem is.

I have a support ticket in (to Bravenet), but the replies I am getting are not helping...

First, they ask me about nameservers, but the Blogger Help instructions do not mention anything other than CNAME's. So, I replied to the support tech with a link to those instructions. Next, I get them telling me to create the CNAME as per the Blogger Help instructions. I replied that I had already done that (as I had mentioned when I first submitted the support ticket!). And I only get one reply from them per day it seems.

Arrrgggghhh!!!!

Now For the Domain Name

I have finally finished moving my content back over here to Blogger! Now, I am working on getting the domain name (www.knotgypsydesigns.com) to point to this blog...

So far, I have canceled my other webhost account and created a new CName.

But, when I change the Blogger settings and test it, I still get sent to the previous website. I think I may need to wait a day to let the old website disappear. I will try again tomorrow.

Wish me luck in getting this ironed out.

Purefire Waxworks

A few weeks ago, I was bitten by our first mosquito of the season. Yes, we are already warming up down here in south central Texas...So, I was reminded of one of my favorite Etsy Sellers...

...The woman who owns and operates Purefire Waxworks - Gently Hand Crafted Candles & Incense. She specializes in using natural ingredients in her incense and candles.

I originally ordered some citronella incense from her last year. It really does keep the mosquitoes at bay - even Texas ones! So, I have become a regular customer. Anything that chases mosquitoes and smells so very nice while doing so is a wonderful thing in my book.

I have gone on to try some of her other incense and some candles - all very nice. And, she provides excellent customer service.

So, if you like candles and incense and want some that is hand made and of natural ingredients, I don't think you will find a better place to go. She should have some of that citronella incense out soon, or you can contact her and ask her about it. (I would not mind if you mention my name...smile)

Arrow - A new Variation of Diamonds

I was playing with my new beads (again, still) and I really wanted to use the new bugle beads. The problem was that I only have a couple of designs that utilize bugle beads...so...I came up with a new variation on the basic "Diamonds" pattern.

This orange and red one was the first I tried (after making a sampler). I used a button closure because I wanted to see how it would work for this design. I like it alright, but it is a little bulky. So, I get to keep this one!

Then, I wanted to use colors of storm and water...and I varied the "diamond" segment by omitting the 6mm round focal and making it a "double diamond lattice work" segment. I also extended it with a 3rd motif set to make a large bracelet. The harmony of colors gives the "double diamond" a textured look. I did rather like this one...

Next, I wanted to play with contrast in colors. I also experimented with leaving off part of the beginning/ending segments to make a medium sized bracelet. I am not sure I like where I put the "pearly" seed beads...a little too busy? Ah, well, I have learned that sometimes when I think something did not work, someone disagrees with me - turns out, that is the piece they like best!

Lastly, but certainly not least, I wanted to use those cream and brown marbled focal beads...they look like chocolate, cream, and caramel...mmmmm...yum. Here I used the "pearly cream" seed beads in a more focused way and I do like the results...I want to keep this one even more than I want to keep the orange one. I love fire and I love chocolate! Can't I keep both???

Beads! Beads! Beads!

New Beads! I love getting a new set of beads...so many colors. (drool, errrr, excuse me).

The last time I tried Czechoslavakian seed beads, their holes seemed a bit small. But oh the colors...so I bravely tried again (and how!). Since that time, I have discovered that C-lon cord can occasionally be flattened out in places. This makes the tip too wide to easily fit through those tiny holes. But, if I trim off the flattened part (and re-treat with fingernail polish of course), the resultant rounder tip will more easily fit. So, I ordered some Czech size 11 seed beads in all kinds of colors...They worked great! The hole sizes were just fine.

Then, I was craving some new focals. Yes, I still love those faceted Czech fire-polished beads (they sparkle so nicely and their holes are reliably the right size), but I like to experiment. I really like the round Druk beads. They have a lot of finishes to choose from...but, again, hole size is a problem. Some of my micro macrame designs require 4 strands of cord to pass through the bead hole. I have found that the holes in the 6mm and 8mm sizes, the holes will only allow 2 strands of cord. Only the 10mm will allow 4 strands. So....I went ahead and bought a bunch. I will use the 10mm's in "Spirals" anklets (which require 4 strands to pass through the bead holes) without a lot of problems. And, most of my other designs require only 1-2 strands to pass through bead holes....As you can see in photo below of "Lacy Ripples Bracelet in Lustrous Blue" that the Druk beads worked fine.

Beading Fever

Apparently my muse was not done with me yet...

In my previous post "Riding the Waves", I said I was tempted to keep the bracelet with the orange gemstone chips. I have changed my mind. I want to keep this one.

It is reversible, too.

I also made some earrings to go with it.

I have also finished this one with snowflake obsidian beads.

My creative energies come in waves. For awhile, I will be empty and unable to create anything. I do have various tricks to trigger my creativity, but it can be difficult at times. Then, when a creative wave hits me, I am in a fever. Ideas spill over and I even have trouble sleeping. I don't want to eat or do anything but bead. This past week is one of those times. I get so exhausted, but I admit I love it anyway.

Riding the Waves

While playing with my basic "Waves" pattern, varying the beads I use. I dug into my stash of leftover beads and found some of various colors, shapes and sizes. Some are gemstone chips, some pressed glass, and some faceted. I have had a blast! I ended up making 5 bracelets and a choker (or collar) necklace. I am in the middle of another bracelet and the ideas are not slowing down...

First, I did a simple variation - adding some stone beads in the "waves" part of the bracelet. I wanted to use my new imitation "cherry quartz" beads as focals and matched the rest of the bracelet to them. I tried a vermeil (gold-plated over sterling silver) hook and eye closure.

Second, I used orange gemston chips (sorry, I don't what they are) and green focals. This time I used a button closure without a tassel. I am sorely tempted to keep this one for my personal collection.

Third, I used an assortment of mixed glass beads in various shapes in aqua, teal, and white. This time, I started with the button and ended with the button hole with a tassel. I think this is my favorite closure for this bracelet series as it allows the bracelet to be worn with either side showing - reversible!

Fourth, I had to try for a necklace that could be worn as a choker or as a collar. I have wanted to use this assortment of white and clear beads for some time. I think this necklace, if worn with side A showing, would look great with that little black dress. Or, if worn with side B showing, It makes a beautiful bridal necklace. (In photo above, I folded the necklace so as to show both sides - B on top, A on bottom.)

Fifth, for those who like purple, I made the next bracelet with a variety of purple beads of varying shades and textures. I tried a sterling silver lobster claw on this one. I still like the button closure with a tassel.

Sixth, I had this assortment of beads just sitting around waiting for its chance. I think this is where the beads belong. I returned to the button closure with a tassel and I love it.

Amazing "Shoe Purses"

I was surfing Etsy the other day and I came across a very unique shop "Junquete". Like many of us, the artist who owns that shop loves shoes and purses. She has put them together to make "Shoe Purses". I love them, they are unique and practical. They will literally "stand up". She reports that the one she kept for herself has lasted through all kinds of use. You really must see them, she currently has two listed here.

Spirals Lariat Necklaces

As I am transferring content from the other website over here, I have decided to rewrite some of it and in this case combine some related posts to create one post showcasing my "Spiral Lariat Necklaces".

The one in photo above, I used only black cord, gray seed beads and purple Czechoslavakian fire-polished crystal round focal beads. I like the dual neutrals with the purple contrast - this is one of my favorite lariats.

This next one has purple cord with cobalt blue facted Czechoslavakian fire-polished crystal round focal beads. Sort of a traditional look with a twist. This one is currently listed at my Etsy Shop. See "Necklaces" section.

This one used up some brown oval glass beads I had in my stash, as well as some other amber and brown glass ones. I think it all worked out pretty nice, and this is another one of my favorite lariats. This one is currently listed at my Etsy Shop. See "Necklaces" section.
This last one deserves the full description:

I used a little subtle asymmetry between the beaded segments in the body of the lariat and the beaded segments heading the tassels. In the body, the segments are comprised of the triangular bead surrounded by the dark teal beads. The tassel head segments are comprised of the triangular bead surrounded by one dark teal bead and one clear bead.

Then, a little asymmetry between the segments in the head of the tassels and the beaded segments at the bottom of the tassels. The tassel head segment has no spacer beads within (only at each end as on all segments). The segments at bottom of tassel does have spacer beads. See tassel on right in photo below.

Then, I began the second tassel fully intending to make it just like the first one. But, I made a mistake and missed one of the spacer beads. I tied it off before finding the mistake. I had pulled that ending knot too tightly to undo. I was now in a quandary. I did not want to lose all the work I put into the lariat! How could I fix this? How could I fix it without being obvious that I was “just fixing” it. Then, because I already had asymmetry on the brain, an idea came to me. Make the second tassel a more intense study of asymmetry! So, I finished off the strands as follows: One strand has no spacers, one has all the spacers, one has the spacer missing between the first two beads, and one has the spacer missing between the last two beads.

I really liked the result, but was afraid I was no longer objective. I asked my husband what he thought. He loved it. The asymmetry is a bit subtle and you don’t notice it right away. You just kind of notice there is something interesting about the necklace. Then, you look closer and…

Necessity is the mother of invention, is it not? I think I may experiment some more with asymmetry!

When it came to naming it, I was thinking something that suggests winter, ice, etc. We tossed out several names until I said “Winter Wonder”, sort of traditional sounding. My husband cinched it when he said that it fits because when you look at the necklace you “wonder” what is so interesting, and then you “wonder” if she did it on purpose!

Here is the finished lariat necklace. I must say this is my very favorite lariat yet...so, if no one buys it, it's mine! Right now it is on consignment at my favorite local coffee shop - Chiro Java in Seguin, Texas.

I Don't Understand

This morning: I woke up, fed the cats, got coffee and checked my email as I do every morning. I found to my delight, another order for a pattern. I processed it right away and sent the pattern. I moved on to check my Etsy Shop....

And found that the above mentioned customer had left me negative feedback, but no commentary as to why. I was stunned. I immediately emailed this person asking what was wrong with the order.

As I delved deeper, I noticed that this customer was from Portugal and new to Etsy. So, perhaps being new to Etsy and perhaps not fluent in English, this person clicked on "negative" instead of "positive". At least I hope that was what happened....

I take pride in my work and in providing good customer service. Of course, I am human and therefore not perfect so I do make mistakes. I try to correct them as soon as I find them.

I ask that, if you are unhappy with my product or service, to please contact me and allow me to fix the problem. I certainly cannot fix something unless I know about it...

This seems the week for problems. First, my other website got hacked. Then, my Sweetie has had some frustrations at work...and now, this. Hopefully, this constitutes Murphy's Law of Three - "Trouble comes in Threes"...and this will be the end of this spate of problems.

A little while later...

All is well. I have heard back from the customer and I was right - she is new to Etsy and clicked on the wrong button...whew!

I had posted on the forums and as a result, I found a great Free Translation Online service and I found out about an Etsy feedback function called "Kiss and Make-up". Clicking on it initiates a process to have negative feedback changed (if it was in error and with the agreement of the other person)

So, I have learned some things today!

Macrame - Instructions, Patterns and Tutorials

Making macrame jewelry is a lot of fun. There are projects that are quite simple and those that are as complex as you can imagine. Once you have mastered the knots and how to put them together in various projects, a world of creative possibilities opens up. There are literally so many ways you can take this art that the possibilities seem endless.

To Get Started:
If you are totally unfamiliar with macrame, find "Basic Macrame Knots". You can use any kind of cord to practice the knots - even some that is thicker than you will eventually use for beading. This is just to get you familiar with the knots.

Are you ready for a project?

There are quite a few free instructions for various projects available on the internet. Although, not all of them are for micro macrame jewelry. A quick Google Search gave me several. One I liked at a glance was Hand Crafted by Elaine.

Of course, you could browse my "Patterns" and you may find a project you want to try.

Or browse "KnotGypsy's BookStore for Beaders" for a variety of beading books including some on beaded macrame. Most any book on macrame knots should suffice. Just find one you like. Do the illustrations show the steps clearly? Are the instructions understandable to you?

Glues and Closures

Glues, Etc

To stiffen the ends of the cord and to prevent fraying, I use clear fingernail polish. I paint some on, and gently twist the cord in the direction of the spiraled plies. After it dries, I snip the ends on a diagonal and paint a little more polish on. When making a large piece with a lot of small holed beads, I find I need to renew the ends from time to time. I find this most necessary with the Omega brand cord. As the C-lon is stiffer, the need is not so great. I've even made entire pieces with C-lon without the polish.

To secure end knots, I dab on some "Jewel Glue" by Delta. It is a fabric glue for attaching jewels, beads, & rhinestones to fabric. It is washable, so unlikely to dissolve if one of my pieces get wet. I don't recommend routinely getting the jewelry wet, but I may be overly cautious. I gave an ankle bracelet to a friend of mine about 3 years ago. She wears it all the time, and claims to even take a shower in it. It still looks much as it did when I made it. (Cord used was the Omega Brand.) I buy the glue at Walmart.

Closures:

I use a variety of closures, but the most often: buttons, lobster claws, and toggles. I try to get silver or gold plated clasps. Hopefully, soon I'll be able to upgrade to sterling and gold filled. Still Fire Mountain Gems is the store of my choice.

With the buttons, some metal, most plastic; depends on the button. There is a lot of variety in buttons. I say, let yourself go wild! I get them at sewing shops, Walmart, etc. My favorite local supplier is Hancock Fabrics. They have a large selection, larger than they have in their online store.

Work Surface

Let's talk about the surface used to pin your work to.

I got lucky, and bought a Puzzle Brand mousepad at garage sale many years ago (before I even started micro macrame!). I didn't even know why I was buying it, but it works wonderfully well. It is one of those old fashioned thick ones (5/8 inches thick, cloth covered). You, remember, those old, thick pads shaped kind of like a puzzle piece. I have just spent the last 30 minutes on google search looking for even an old used one. I failed. I could not find even one. Alas, all the modern mousepads are ultra thin. I have tried one of the new ones in a desperate attempt to have a back up in the event my beloved mousepad dies. Not so good.I don't know how I will survive when this one finally wears out.

A Call to the Universe: Help me find more of these thick mousepads!

Reading in various books on macrame, I see macrame boards, and cork boards mentioned (available at most hobby stores and some Walmarts). I have never tried the macrame boards, but I did try a cork (bulletin type) board, once. The cork board worked, but not nearly so well as my trusty mousepad. My mousepad is not only thick, but the foam rubber part is nice and dense. It grabs and holds my pins securely as I pull on it while knotting.

For now, my mousepad still lives. I worry about the day it dies. I will continue to search for one of these old type mousepads. Failing that, I will be looking for a pad of similar materials.

Anyone reading this blog, who knows of the whereabouts of such a pad, please leave a comment. Perhaps if enough of us crafters want some, some manufacturer will make them for us. I would even like one a little larger for larger projects. I mean, while I'm dreaming...

Jewels in Fiber

I have been buying my C-lon nylon beading cord from Jewels in Fiber for several months now. I have been extremely happy with her prices and her excellent customer service. She carries a variety of other cords as well.

Recently, I opened my mail to find C-lon micro cord samples! She sent me some samples without my asking for them! It was such a wonderful surprise.

Marion Hunziker-Larsen is also an amazing artist. I am in awe of her talent and skill at knotting. Her style is unique. I encourage you to take a look at her Collection.

Let's Talk About Beads

Although, I like to play with a wide variety of beads, and there are some very beautiful beads out there; not all of them will work with my designs. The biggest problem I run into is hole size. Some of my designs require as many as 4 strands of cord to pass through.

Through trial and error, I have found beads that work. My "Basics" as shown in photo above are seed beads (top row, in boxes) and faceted Czechoslavakian fire polished crystal rounds (bottom row). My favorite source is Fire Mountain Gems.

Note: In the descriptions below, I refer to C-lon beading cord and Omega nylon crochet thread. See post "Cord" for more information on these cords (and others) .

Seed Beads:

Size 11 - With C-lon cord, I can use most any brand. Delicas are very uniform and have a very nice hole size. Dynamites are a bit varied in size, giving a more organic look. Ornela Czech seed beads are quite beautiful, but their hole size is a bit smaller than the other brands. They still work with the C-lon beading cord, but not at all with the Omega nylon crochet thread.

Size 8 - Will accommodate 2 strands of cord (C-lon or Omega). Very useful as accent beads.

Size 6 - Will accommodate 4 strands of cord (C-lon or Omega). Very useful.

Czech Glass Beads:

Fire-Polished - I most commonly use 6mm and 8mm beads. Occasionally, I also use 4mm and 10mm beads.

4mm - will accommodate 1 strand of C-lon, but not Omega.

6mm - will accommodate 2 strands of C-lon (or Omega but it is a tight fit).

8mm - will accommodate 4 strands of C-lon or (or Omega but it is a tight fit).

10mm - will easily accommodate 4 strands of either cord and come in handy as focals.

Pressed Glass in various shapes - I really love to experiment with the different shapes, but the holes are typically small. Some of the smaller sized beads will accommodate only one strand of cord and the larger beads will only accommodate 2 strands (of either C-lon or Omega cords). The smaller teardrops and flower cones work especially well in tassels; and I do love tassels!

Gemstone Chips:

I have recently been experimenting with gemstone chips. I love the colors and the organic look. Chips offer a bit of chaos that I believe adds interest. The hole sizes are typically small, but will accommodate 1 strand of C-lon cord. So, I have had to develop designs (like "Criss Cross" and a variation of "Nouveau") just so I can use these beads.

There you have it, my most commonly used beads.

Cord

I use a variety of cord in my work. Here is a run down on each type and where I get it. Photo above shows C-lon nylon beading cord in the front row and Omega Brand Crochet Thread #2 in the back row. See below for more information.

C-lon nylon beading cord:

I discovered this cord this past January. I love it. Its gauge is narrow enough to fit through most size 11 seed beads (without too much difficulty). It comes in 64 colors and being nylon, it is durable. Although it is nylon, it has an organic look when knotted into jewelry. It runs a bit stiff, giving body to whatever piece I use in in. I get my C-lon beading cord at Jewels in Fiber.

They have now come out with C-lon Micro cord, so far in only 8 colors. I have not yet tried it...but I want to. It is apparently even narrower gauge than regular C-lon bead cord.

Bonded Twine a.k.a. Macrame Beading Cord:

This cord is a heavier gauge than all the other I am listing. It is too heavy a gauge to use with size 11 seed beads, but will often work with size 10 seed beads. I use this cord in designs that don't need the tiny seed beads and for items that need a bit of heft. I think this is a great cord for beginners. So far, the only place I know to get Bonded Twine is at Fire Mountain Gems. It comes in 14 colors.

Mastex Nylon #18:

So far I have only tried Mastex Nylon #18 once. (Also at Jewels in Fiber.) It has a narrower gauge than regular C-lon and is not as stiff. The suppleness will be good for designs that need less body but more draping qualities. I plan to try it some more, I just have not gotten around to it yet. It comes in 24 colors.

Omega Brand Nylon Crochet Thread #2:

I used this for years before I discovered C-lon bead cord. It has a slightly heavier gauge, which sometimes makes it difficult to thread through the holes in some brands of size 11 seed beads. Dynamite brand seed beads are the most reliable (in hole size), that I have found, for this cord. (I will discuss seed beads in future article.) It is supple and works great for items that need to drape (i.e. my "Spirals Lariat Necklace"). I also use it in my beaded crochet pieces. It comes in 80 colors, many quite vibrant. I first found it at my local Hobby Lobby store, but they did not always have it in stock or they did not always have the colors I wanted. I have since found this online source for Omega Brand Nylon Crochet Thread #2, but I have not yet ordered from this site.

Cotton crochet thread:

I used cotton crochet thread when I first began micro macrame. As an avid crocheter, it was what I had on hand. Its narrow gauge makes it easy to put through the holes in pretty much any size 11 seed bead (and some smaller sizes). It comes in a wide variety of colors. It holds its shape well when knotted into various designs. The main drawback is that if using beads with sharp edges around the holes (i.e. certain gemstone beads and many crystal beads), the cotton crochet thread will fray, eventually causing your work to fall apart. Cotton is organic and will eventually degrade. But if you use beads with smooth holes and take good care of jewelry pieces made with it, they should last for some time. I still consider cotton crochet thread to be a viable alternative in some pieces. I get mine at hobby stores, Walmart, etc.
